JOHN ADAMS
(1735 - 1826) Second President of the United States and a drafter of the Declaration of Independence, which he also signed. He later joined Franklin and Jay to negotiate peace with Great Britain. Partly-printed D.S. "John Adams" as President, 1p. oblong folio, New York, Mar. 8, 1798, a four-language ship's passport issued to William Morrison of the ship Mercury, "...of the burthen of Two hundred two & 27/95 tons or thereabouts, lying at present in the port New York bound for Hamburgh [sic] and leaden with Sugar and Coffee..." Countersigned by TIMOTHY PICKERING as Secretary of State and Port of New York Collector, JOHN SANDS. Usual folds some repaired on verso, some marginal wear, light soiling and fold affects bottom of Adams' signature, archival mounting remnants on verso, else very good condition. Sold with a mat that simply requires a re-hinging of the document.
