Description:

JOHN A. DIX
(1798 - 1879) Union major general most remembered for his threat to shoot anyone hauling down the American flag, and his suppression of the bloody New York draft riots. Fine content war-date A.L.S.,1p. 8vo., Baltimore, Jan. 10, 1862 to Mr. Lord, the stenographer for Benjamin Wade's Joint Committee on Conduct of the War, writing, "I read late last night and in great haste from nearly exact report of my examination before the Committee. Recurring to the subject today on my way home, it struck me that I had made a mistake in confounding two events -- Genl. Scott's retirement & Genl. McClellan's assumption of the command of the Army of the Potomac. Will you please strike out the works I inserted in speaking of the Eastern shore expedition? I think they re these (speaking of Genl. Scott) 'who immediately afterwards returned from the command of the Army.' At all events, they are words to that effect. Please advise me on the receipt of this note & that the words referred to have been struck out. I should not have made the mistake had I not read from manuscript in my near haste." In a short postscript in the right margin, Dix adds: "As the words referred to were not in the original report & were stated[?] by me for the purpose of explanation, I have not hesitated to ask you to strike them out." Benjamin Wade, a Radical Republican openly hostile to the Lincoln administration, formed this joint committee in December 1861 to investigate various failings of the Union war effort including Lincoln's firing of Fremont, the loss at First Bull Run and the conduct of General George McClellan. Very fine condition.
