Description:

JEFFERSON DAVIS
(1808 - 1889) President of the Confederacy who led his armies beyond the surrender at Appomattox. A.L.S. signed "J.D." in the postscript only, 1p., 8vo, April 10, 1879, written on both sides to a fellow army officer on his commanding officer's behalf. In part: "General Wolff commanding the 7th Army Corps...instructs me to have the honor to write to you in reply to your letter...he has read with the greatest interest the details that you have given him about your family and about yourself. I cannot unfortunately give you a favorable response on the subject of the family relationship which may exist between him and any of the Wolff, which is the subject of inquiry in your letter. None of the members of his family originally of Burgundy did in fact serve under the first empire, equally none of his name has ever lived in Paris". Davis adds in his postscript: "Doubting whether I have discyphered [sic] the signature of the acting officer, and having made a full translation to bring the letter into English usage, I have thought it well to return the original to you."Vertical mailing fold, light soiling, else very good.
