Description:

EDWARD R. CANBY
(1817 - 1873) Union major general who commanded the Department of New Mexico stopping Sibley's assault on California. He later commanded the assault on Mobile and after the war was killed by Modoc Indians. Scarce A.L.S. as "Assistant Adjutant General", 1p., 4to., Washington, July 28, 1853, a reply to the Reverend W.D. Phillips of Rochester. In part: "...You are informed in reply to your letter of the 26th inst. that the family of the late Adjutant General R. Jones resides in this city. Address Mrs. Mary A. Jones, 13th Street, Washington..." Canby was known for being a brilliant and highly efficient administrator, but other generals such as Grant questioned his ferocity in battle. Archivally repaired on verso, else fine.
