Description:

JAPANESE PHOTO ALBUM OF THE MILITARY HOSPITAL AT HIMEJI
A folio album containing 123 mounted b/w photographs, ranging in size from 3 1/2" x 5" to 11" x 9", documenting a high-ranking Japanese general's visit to the military hospital at Himeji. The album includes images of the general and his delegation visiting wards at the hospital (with the patients sitting in their beds at attention); numerous individual and group portraits of officers, soldiers, medics and nurses; photos of performances given for the visiting delegation, and ambulances. Of interest are several photographs of the medical facility itself including an examination room with electronic machines of unknown utility, an exercise room, and what appears to be a pressure chamber with several patients standing inside wearing goggles. Also of interest are several images of outdoor games held in front of Himeji Castle. Overall the photographs are in very good to fine condition. The album itself bears wear to the front and back boards, binding frayed, else good condition. A fascinating look into a seldom-explored facet of Japanese military life and an important visual record of a complex that was largely destroyed during the American fire-bombing of the city in 1945.
