Description:

JAPANESE "GOOD LUCK" BELT OF 1,000 STITCHES
A scarce war relic, a Japanese soldier's waist sash, 38" x 10", yellow dyed cotton bearing a red Japanese "meatball" sewn at center. The sash also bears one thousand white stitches that form several Japanese characters. This particular sash belonged to an artillery officer, who, like many of his fellow soldiers, wore it with the hope that it would make him "bullet-proof". The stitches were obtained by a mother, sister, or girlfriend from friends, family members, and sympathetic strangers solicited on the street. Sold with: a cloth (silk?) window banner, 35" x 9", bearing gold fringe at bottom and a "rising sun" emblem, indicating that a male member in the Japanese home was serving in the armed forces. Some soiling to the sash, else very good. Uncommon! Two pieces.
