JAMES WILKINSON
(1757 - 1825) American general, served as a captain in Benedict Arnold's unsuccessful Quebec campaign. Later he was Horatio Gates' deputy adjutant general in the Saratoga campaign and was given the honor of bringing to Congress the news of General Burgoyne's defeat. Later involved in the Conway Cabal and in scheming with Burr and in Spanish intrigues. Scarce A.L.S. with initialed postscript, 1p. 4to., Philadelphia, Dec. 27, 1815 to J. H. Blake, in part: "...I have not ceased to harass you, and now permit me to introduce & recommend to you Major Barker of the late army, one of its brightest ornaments, who is qualified to shine in any sphere of Life...". In his postscript he mentions a claim made against two other parties, adding: "...Col. Duane is engaged on this business...". A few toned spots here and there, else fine.
