Broadside, 1p. folio, Boston, Feb. 4, 1808, proclaiming a day of fasting and prayer. Titled: "Commonwealth of Massachusetts. By His Excellency James Sullivan, Esq. ... A proclamation, for a day of public fasting and prayer... Thursday, the seventh day of next April ... Given at the Council chamber in Boston, this fourth day of February ... one thousand eight hundred and eight ..." In the late 18th and early 19th centuries New England governors would regularly proclaim fast and thanksgiving days. Normally a day of fasting and prayer would be called in the Spring, as this broadside notes "...in hope of a plentiful harvest...." [Printed by Young and Minns, Boston] Shaw & Shoemaker, 15533. OCLC identifies but one extant institutional copy at the American Antiquarian Society. Marginal wear including chips and small tears affecting a few words of text, light to moderate dampstain, else very good.
