JAMES SULLIVAN PROCLAIMS THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY
Printed broadside, 1p. folio, Boston, Nov. 9, 1808, proclaiming a day of thanksgiving, titled: " Commonwealth of Massachusetts. By His Excellency James Sullivan, Esq...A proclamation, for a day of public thanksgiving and praise, throughout the commonwealth". In the late 18th and early 19th centuries New England governors would regularly proclaim fast and thanksgiving days. Normally a day of thanksgiving would be called in autumn, following the season's harvest, as this broadside notes "...It being ever been the laudable usage of the people of this Commonwealth, to set apart one day annually, as a day of PUBLIC THANKSGIVING and PRAISE...". Shaw & Shoemaker, 15534. OCLC identifies but one extant institutional copy at the American Antiquarian Society. Marginal wear including chips and small tears affecting a few words of text, light to moderate dampstain, else very good.
