THE DEATH OF JAMES SULLIVAN
A lot of three pieces including a printed broadside, 16" x 7", detailing the "Order of Procession For the Funeral of His Excellency JAMES SULLIVAN, Esq. from his late Mansion House, in Summer-Street, on FRIDAY (This Day) Dec. 16, 1808. Below, the order "FUNERAL ESCORT" has been detailed, naming the soldiers and dignitaries surrounding an image of Sullivan's coffin. Marginal tears and chips, horizontal creases, else quite clean and in very good condition. Offered together with a manuscript D.S. "Wm Tudor", 3pp. 4to., [Boston] Jan 31, 1809, a joint resolution of the Massachusetts Legislature secretarially signed by Harrison Gray Otis and Levi Lincoln, being the report of a joint committee "...directed to consider and report the proper mode of shewing [sic] the respect of the Legislature to the memory of His Excellency James Sullivan Esquire, late Governor of this Commonwealth...Resolved...the members of the Legislature...will wear a black crape on the left arm, the remainder of this Session...". Inside, a related manuscript D.S. in an unknown hand, 1p. 4to. Boston, Feb. 3, 1809 to Harrison Gray Otis and Timothy Bigelow thanks them for the wishes of the legislature: "The Resolve of the Legislature...has been made known to me through your most acceptable letter...I beg to render the assurance for the highest respect; & to express my fervent wishes, that if the hour of calamity should occur to you, such consolations may be experienced as you have so feelingly offered to others...". Light folds, a few marginal tears, else very good. Together three pieces.
