JAMES MURRAY MASON
(1798 - 1871) Confederate Congressman and commissioner to Great Britain and France. He and John Slidell were removed by Federal forces from a British ship nearly drawing Britain into the Civil War. Scarce A.L.S. 1p. 4to., Winchester, Dec. 3, 1839, to "Messrs. Gales & Staton", asking: "...Will be good enough to send me their daily papers during the session of Congress, in lieu of my present country papers and oblige...". Light toning and corners clipped, otherwise very good.
