JAMES MONROE
(1758 - 1831) Fifth President of the United States who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and promulgated the Monroe Doctrine. D.S. as Secretary of State, 4pp., folio, Washington, circa 1812, an order commissioning Captain Shabuel G. Bronson to sail as a privateer during the War of 1812. The first two pages consists of a printed copy of President James Madison's "Act Concerning Letters of Marque, Prizes, and Prize Goods," a letter of marque authorizing privateering against Britain and setting rules of action. The third page is a partly-printed document written to authorize privateering commissions. This commission, No. 206", gives instructions to Captain Bronson, "commander of the private armed Schooner called the Betsy." Bronson, a Hingham, MA native, would die at sea in 1819. Boldly signed at bottom. Lightly toned with minor folds, else fine.
