Description:

JAMES MONROE
(1758 - 1831) Fifth President of the United States who negotiated the Louisiana Purchase and promulgated the Monroe Doctrine. Partly printed D.S. as President, 4pp., folio, Washington, Sept. 13, 1824, the granting of a patent to Joseph Buchanan for "producing Steam for Steam Engines & for other Purposes". Large, bold, clear signature, "James Monroe", countersigned by JOHN QUINCY ADAMS as Secretary of State and the incredibly influential WILLIAM WIRT as Attorney General. Wirt's argued cases include: Gibbons v Ogden, McCulloch v Maryland, and Cherokee Nation v Georgia. Buchanan's patent was incredibly important during its time. Joseph Buchanan, a doctor, professor, and inventor, improved upon the steam engine design by adding a capillary-type generator, greatly increasing output and using less fuel to do so. Buchanan originally wanted the engine to replace the hot air balloon and allow him to fly, but converted the engine to land and water use when that failed. By the end of 1824, Buchanan's invention was in factories, on boats, and other steam-driven conveyances. Light toning at edges, ribbon and steel superbly preserved, else patent title is fine. Buchanan's written description [attached] is moderately toned, with minor loss at center folds.
