Description:

JAMES MADISON
(1751-1836) Fourth President of the United States considered the "Father of the Constitution", he authored the Federalist papers and sponsored the Bill of Rights. Partly-printed D.S. as President, "James Madison", 1p., oblong folio vellum, Washington, Aug. 19, 1812, a land grant awarding a parcel of the Ohio Territory [at Canton]. Countersigned by the Ohio politician EDWARD TIFFIN, the first Commissioner of the General Land Office and first Governor of Ohio. Madison was probably only too happy to sign over this northwest territory in Canton: on the same day, the USS Constitution defeated the Geurriere in heated battle, earning the nickname "Old Ironsides" and helping the young country defeat British attempts to reclaim land. Heavy toning with minor foxing, both signatures somewhat faint. Along with an original copy of a Madison portrait engraving, from the book Farewell Address of George Washington to his Countrymen, published circa 1845, with facsimile signature and inset, "The Burning of the Capitol by the British, 1814", by Stuart and Cook.
