JAMES LONGSTREET
(1821 - 1904) Confederate major general who commanded Lee's right wing at Antietam, and the left flank at Chickamauga. Longstreet has been accused of delaying his attack at Gettysburg, leading to the Confederate defeat there. Interesting A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Gainesville, June 25, 1889, to Col. W. Owens in New Orleans regarding his involvement in a railroad venture. In part: "...My attention has just been called to the transfer of Franchise of the original New Orleans and North Eastern Railway...to the Company that afterwards built the road. The Franchise I am told was worth half a million of dollars and as I understood was never...transferred to the new Company. I have been under the impression that the transfer was duly made, but am now informed that it was not, that the last President of the Board...now died, and that the Board of Directors was not duly reorganized, with a new President...We spent much time and money in getting the Franchise which gave us extensive privileges in the city of New Orleans...if you can find the facts in the case...we can employ lawyers to settle it...My impression is that I agreed with the new company some years ago...but...the new company took and used our valuable Franchise without our consultation...They gave me a thousand dollars in the new stock...They have put a fraud on me and got not only my bonds and stocks but this valuable Franchise... Please give the matter a little of your spare time...I believe I was the first Prest. of the company...". Longstreet settled in New Orleans after the war and was named President of the New Orleans, Texas & Northeastern Railroad in 1870. In 1881, control of that company was acquired by Alabama, New Orleans, Texas & Pacific Junction Railways Company in a deal that Longstreet obviously found unsatisfactory. Boldly penned and very good.
