JAMES L. KEMPER
(1823-1895) Confederate brigadier general who fought at 1st Bull Run, Seven Pines, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg he was desperately wounded and captured during Pickett's charge. Promoted late in the war to major general he survived the conflict and subsequently became Virginia's governor. A.L.S. as Virginia governor, 2pp., 4to., Richmond, October 23, 1974, a letter reprimanding the state's Land Office Register, William P.M. Kellam, for drinking and gambling. In part: "...In my last interview with you I reminded you that you have repeatedly gotten intoxicated and gambled at gambling houses in violation of your promises to me...You acknowledged your guilt as charged, and pledged me that if I would not then remove you and if I would allow you on the last day of the month to resign your office, you would not in the meantime be guilty of either of the practices named. I am informed that you have repeatedly violated that pledge and that you still persist in gaming and excessive drinking. How about this?" Boldly signed, "J.L. Kemper". The letter is written on official Office of the Virginia Governor letterhead, with a superb engraving print of the seal. Age toned with foxing in some areas, else fine. Lot also includes the original letter promising change from Kellam, and an official letterhead envelope with engraved seal print.
