JAMES K. POLK
(1795 - 1849) Eleventh President of the United States who led the country during the Mexican-American War, and secured the territories of Oregon and Washington. Partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p., vellum folio, Washington, August 17, 1848, a military brevet promoting "Captain Daniel Ruggles" to major. According to the document, Polk promoted Ruggles due to his actions in Mexican War battles, specifically: "for gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Contreras and Churubusco...". Boldly signed, "James K. Polk" with his paraph below. Countersigned by WILLIAM LEARNED MARCY as Secretary of War. Ruggles would go on to resign his commission and side with the CSA during the Civil War. Ruggles became a CSA brigadier general, commanding a division at Shiloh and leading the prisoner exchange at the end of the war. The document bears official seal and excellent engraving prints at top and bottom. Age toned with the expected folds. Very good.
