(JAMES GARFIELD RAISES HELL)
ORLANDO C. RISDON (1840 - 1894) Union brevet brigadier general who served with James Garfield in the 42nd Ohio volunteers and was wounded at Vicksburg in May 1863. He later went on to command a colored regiment. Great content, war-date letter concerning future president James Garfield, 4pp. 8vo., Camp Williams, Lawrence County, Ky., Dec. 18, 1861, on patriotic letterhead. In part: '…Colonel Garfield returned last night from Louisville where he has been for a few days and when he came to the guard line he was halted and the pass was demanded which of course he had not, coming as he did from down the river. The sentinel told him to stand, and called for the corporal of the guard who did not hear or was too lazy to answer him. Col. Garfield becoming impatient drew his revolver and fired it six times…you ought to have seen the regiment or what there was here turned out and ready for a fight, when to our utter chagrin we found not the enemy but Col. Garfield who we were all glad to see but I am afraid that there was some hard words used at not finding the enemy and the boys went back to their quarters feeling rather abused at not having the chance of killing a fellow being. I will admit that I was disappointed for we all in good trim and just wanted a brush with the enemy to keep our guns from rusting and to say we had heard from the enemy…'. Very good.
