(GETTYSBURG) HIRAM CLAY ALLEMAN
(1831 - 1906) Union colonel with the 127th Pa. during the Civil War, served with distinction at Fredericksburg, where he was wounded, and wounded again at Chancellorsville, later marched his regiment to Gettysburg, where he was made Military Governor of the town, battlefields and hospitals. Good content A.L.S. 'H. C. Alleman' 2pp. 4to., Gettysburg, July 9, 1863. Six days after the end of the battle, the newly-appointed Governor Alleman writes to John G. Schweitzer, AAG of the Department of Susquehanna, in part: '…I marched [from] Gettysburg with my command at 2 ½ o'clock P.M. to-day and encamped on the south side of the town. I could have marched this place last evening but for the impassability of the mountains…nearly all of the bridges having been swept away…I have assumed command of this post and detailed Lt. Col. Mackay of my regt. Provost Marshall of Gettysburg. Capt. W. F. Barkin [?] U.S.A. is Depot Quartermaster. Genl. Halleck has sent some of his staff-officers – Captains…Willard Smith and H. B. Blood to Gettysburg with written instructions of the G'ment to collect all Government Property found on battle-fields and forward suitable arms to Army of Potomac and balance to Washington… Lt. Shaff [?] Ordnance Officer has also been sent to receive all collected ordnance and ship the same to Washington. I have detailed company A of my regt. For private guard duty in Gettysburg…I will detail men in the morning to collect all arms and accoutrements upon the battle-fields. Shall I turn them over to the Ordnance Officer? I will also make details to bury the dead…'. Near fine.
