Description:

JAMES ARCHER and CHARLES G. HARKER
James Archer, (1817 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general and colonel of the 5th Texas in Hood's Brigade,, fought at Antietam, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg where he was captured. Charles G. Harker, (1837 - 1864) Union brigadier general killed in action while leading a charge at Kennesaw Mountain. A.D.S, 1p., oblong folio, "Camp Gayoos, W [ashington] T[erritory]", June 30, 1859, a quarterly report of clothing and equipment returned by troops on field exercises. The document itself is interesting, as it shows requisitions for "Sibley tents" and other Sibley tent equipment. Additionally, officers named in the report include RUFUS INGALLS [as Captain] and THOMAS JORDAN [as Captain]-- Ingalls would fight with the Union in the Civil War and eventually become Quartermaster General, while Jordan would fight for the Confederacy, raising a Washington D.C. spy network less than a year after his posting in the Pacific Northwest. Received, approved, and boldly signed by, "J.J. Archer" as Captain and "C.G. Harker" as 2nd Lieutenant. It seems unlikely that the two ever faced each other in Civil War combat. Archer was captured at Gettysburg and imprisoned for a year, being released in poor health and dying shortly afterwards. Harker was killed in action at Kenesaw Mountain. Fine.
