Description:

JACKSON IS WOUNDED AT CHANCELSORSVILLE
War date A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina Infantry, 2pp. 8vo., "North Anna River near Hanover Station Junction, Va." May 9, 1863 to his father reporting on the wounding of Jackson at Chancellorsville (and unbeknownst to Deaton, would die the following day). He writes, in part: "...We came direct from N.C. to this place by the way of Richmond. We are here guarding a bridge on the North Anna at Fredericksburg but from what I can learn the greatest battle of the war has just come off with heavy loss on both sides. Our Noble General Jackson lost one arm. Lee gave old Hooker a complete drubbing and drove him across the Rappahannock. I have not learned as yet how many Yankees our men captured. I know this much, that I saw 2000 pass here yesterday and 3000 today and there is 2500 on behind yet all on their way to Richmond where they will be kept until any adjustments can be made to exchange or parole them. The Yankee cavalry made a dash through this section and cut off the railroad between here and Richmond, tore up tack, captured and destroyed a train. The road is repaired and the acres are now running from here to Richmond..." Usual folds, else fine condition.
