War date A.L.S. of Pvt. Noah Deaton of the 26th North Carolina, 2pp. Kinston, NC., May 30 & June 1, 1862 to his sister. He writes, in part; "...We just returned to camp a few minutes ago from three days tour of picket duty. Our pickets has got to driving the enemy in nearer Newbern and are occasionally capturing a few of the thieves. The latest news here says that our armies under the command of the noble Gen. Stonewall Jackson has given the enemy some terrible blows in Western Virginia and are still in hot pursuit of them. He has captured a regiment of cavalry and about 1500 horses besides several regiments of infantry ar[e] destroyed by him killed taken and put to flight in such panik [sic] that the battle of Bull runn is far behind it in fact he is about to blot the yankees of[f] from that region. the present seems to tell that there will soon be important movements about Richmond Va, and in the valley of the Mississippi but we can only await with anxiety to hear the result. We are expecting to be ordered away from here at any time though me may not soon..." He was correct in assuming a movement was imminent, by the end of June his regiment was stationed near Petersburg as part of the general defense of the region from McClellan who was making an attempt on Richmond. usual folds, else very good.
