291. ANDREW JACKSON Fine association A.L.S. as presidential candidate, 1p. 4to., Washington, Jan. 21, 1824, to Secretary of the Navy Samuel L. Southard, in part: "...The enclosed letter just recd from Mrs. Sterett the mother of the young gentleman for whom I solicited the other day, the appointment of Midshipman in the Navy of the United States: I lay it before you as it will afford you information of his education, experience & fitness...with a hope...he may claim your early attention...". Slight show-through from holograph address penned on verso, else very good. Simply framed with a portrait. The applicant was undoubtedly a direct relation of Andrew Sterett (1778-1807), an officer in the United States Navy during the nation's early days. He saw combat during the Quasi-War with France and in the Barbary Wars, commanding the schooner USS Enterprise in both conflicts. $1,000 - 1,500
