Description:

Passport issued to Austrian industrial worker 'Hans Adolf Bombach', bearing a large, red 'J' on the first page. The 'reisepass' was issued to the 33-year-old Bombach in Vienna on August 23, 1938, still bears his identification photograph, and also bears his particulars on the adjoining page. The sixth page bears a purple inkstamp from a Dutch checkpoint, dated Oct. 23, 1938, and beneath this is an inscription indicating his trip to Australia on Nov. 2, 1938. A later page has been stamped twice, once by the Colombo Harbor police in Nov. 24, 1938 and then by Australian customs in December 12, 1938. This passport was issued days after an August 1938 law was announced, forcing all Jewish men and women bearing first names of 'non-Jewish' origin to add 'Israel' and 'Sara', respectively, to their given names by 1939; since Bombach escaped Germany in December of 1938, he narrowly avoided the need to do so. In addition, as part of the Nazi regime's attempt to isolate Jews, Bombach was forced to stamp his passport with a large 'J' months later on October 10, 1938. Certainly seeing the danger of these two laws, Bombach organized his departure from Germany weeks after his passport was stamped, first taking money out of his bank account in Vienna just four days thereafter, according to a stamp on the seventh page. Fine condition.
