Description:

'J'-STAMPED PASSPORT OF A GERMAN LOCKSMITH
Passport issued to a German locksmith named Siegfried Kurzmann, bearing a large red 'J' on the first page. The 'reisepass' was issued to 24-year-old Kurzmann in Amsterdam on April 3, 1936, and still bears his identification photograph. The following page contains his personal information. Page four bears a stamp 'Alle Erdteile' stating that he is cleared to travel to all continents, and the next shows multiple renewals of his passport at Amsterdam. On pages six and seven he was cleared for travel to Australia making stops in Harwich, Bombay, and Colombo before finally arriving in Freemantle. Interestingly, pages eight and nine show three different passport renewals certified at German embassies from February 1938 to April 1940. It is possible that Kurzmann was forced to renew due to the Nuremberg Race Laws which stated that after October 5, 1938, any Jewish passports that were not stamped with a red 'J' were invalid. Minor ink smearing, else fine condition
