ISAAC SHELBY
(1750 - 1826) American Revolution military officer who fought Indians in Kentucky and Tennessee, defeated the British at King's Mountain, and later served as the first Governor of Kentucky. Fine association A.D.S. 1p. oblong 8vo., an address leaf in his hand, in full: "Brig. Genl. Green Clay Commanding the KY troop in the N. W. Army...". Franked at top right: "Public Service Isaac Shelby". Docketed at left, possibly in Clay's hand: "Come to hand June 13, 1813 at the Capitol". Shelby was brought back into politics with the War of 1812, when he was elected governor of Kentucky, later commanding troops at the Battle of the Thames. Green Clay (1757-1828), was a revolutionary, business tycoon and Kentucky legislator. He was commissioned by Shelby to form a regiment of Kentucky Militia to defend the western frontier, and, in this capacity, secured Fort Meigs. Mounting strip to verso, otherwise very good condition.
