Description:

ROGER SHERMAN AND OLIVER WOLCOTT
A document signed by two of Connecticut's Signers of the Declaration of Independence, 1p. 4to., Litchfield, Aug. 13, 1755. One side bears an A.D.S. of ROGER SHERMAN (1721 - 1793) a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Association, Articles of Confederation (which he helped draft), and the Constitution, the only person to sign all four documents, an order that the Sheriff of Litchfield County (Wolcott) arrest one Ephraim Wilcocks on a complaint that he had attempted to pass: "...a false and Counterfeit Bill made in imitation of a true Bill of Credit of the Colony of Rhode Island of the denomination of five pounds...". On the verso OLIVER WOLCOTT (1726-1797) also a signer of the Declaration of Independence, member of the Continental Congress, and a major general in the Continental Army, pens an A.E.S. his deputy to execute the writ. Typical folds and light toning, else very good. A later endorsement indicates that Wolcott "got his man" the next day!
