Description:

ISAAC F. SHEPARD
(1816-1889) Union colonel, brevetted brigadier general after the war. Shepard served as assistant adjutant general under Nathaniel Lyon, was wounded at Wilson's Creek, and led the Africa Brigade at Vicksburg. Rare A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., ‘Hankow' [now Wuhan], June 10, 1881, on letterhead of the Consulate of the United States for Hankow, Kiukang and Ichang, to his daughter Ella. He writes a touching message, in small part: ‘...My blessing goes out to you in your new home, darling, and I so hope you will be content, happy and prosperous. And do not forget, my dear love, to confer all the happiness you can on others. Neglect none,- be generous in your estimate of all – forget no old friends – be not careless towards those who love you,- treat with charity – those whom you meet and don't like,- be a true lady in all your ways,- and the prideful love of your dear old father will follow you in blessing all his days, and glow over your life afterwards, as a brilliant evening sun burns and glows over the far-lying landscape, touching all with a sweet beauty. God be with you, my sweet child, and with all you love. Kiss the dear boys for me,- ‘little red lobsters' though they may be!…' He signs at the conclusion in black ink. Shows original mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition.
