Description:

541. SAMUEL D. INGHAM (1779 - 1869) Secretary of the Treasury under Andrew Jackson, labored to resolve conflicts between Jackson, who wanted the Bank of the United States destroyed, and the Bank's president, Nicholas Biddle. Rare, superb content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Trenton, Feb. 7, 1853 discussing coin versus paper currency. In part: "...The whole country is more anxious for the passage of Mr. Hunter's bill on coinage &c. If that becomes law, we will be able I think to issue the small note currency - small silver coins and plenty of $ 2 1/2 gold pieces will make their way - not withstanding the prejudices against the gold dollar...they will occupy a considerable space in the currency but a gold coinage of that description is not essential...the indispensable denomination of metallic coins are 1/2 and 1/4 Eagles of gold with 1/2, 1/4, 1/10 & 1/20 of a dollar in Silver...we have nothing else to change the dollars with...I have a very great antipathy towards small bank notes and a horror of Shinplasters...". Light glue remnants along one margin, else near fine condition. $200 - 300
