542. FRANCIS W. KELLOGG (1810-1879) American statesman and MOC who, during the Civil War, organized the Second, Third, and Sixth Regiments and was appointed colonel of the Third Michigan Infantry; during Reconstruction, Andrew Johnson appointed him Collector of Internal Revenue in Alabama, which state he later represented in Congress. Scarce war-date A.L.S. "F.W. Kellogg" 2pp., 4to. on imprinted and illustrated "Thirty Eighth Congress / House of Representatives" letterhead, Washington, Mar. 14, 1864, to Edward M. Stanton, Secretary of War. Kellogg seeks permission to visit George Washington's home at Mount Vernon, in part: "...Major Wilson, Hon. William Kellogg of Ills. and a party of three friends Ladies & Gentlemen at the National Hotel wish to visit Mt. Vernon & respectfully request a Pass or Permit...I will vouch for their loyalty & respectfully request you to grant them...". On the second page appears an A.N.S. by "Alex. Ramsey" while U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania, in part: "...Proposing to be one of this party I would be pleased to have the Secy of War allow the party to visit Mt. Vernon & give them the necessary pass...". Signed by Ramsey at the conclusion and then endorsed by U.S. Senator from Michigan, and future Secretary of the Interior "Z. Chandler". A scarce Civil War association item, very good. Pennsylvania Governor ALEXANDER RAMSEY (1815-1903) served as Secretary of War under R.B. Hayes. Mayor of Detroit ZACHARIAH CHANDLER (1813-1879) served as Secretary of the Interior under President U.S. Grant. $250 - 350
