Description:

Black lacquered leather "pickelhaube"-style helmet, as worn by Imperial Russian officers in the nineteenth century. The high-peaked helmet is crowned with a cruciform nickel silver plate, topped with a finial spike in the form of a flaming shell, also in nickel silver. This finial is loose and lacks internal fasteners, and the front arm of the cruciform plate is broken but present. The front of the helmet is fitted with a brass plate in the form of a Russian double-headed eagle beneath a crown, atop a bowed design containing a shield bearing the regimental number "1". This plate bears a dark patina and some verdigris overall, and shows some deformation. A leather chin strap covered with brass-washed scales is fitted over the front visor. The interior of the helmet shows no liner or suspension system, but bears a stenciled marking in Cyrillic on each side. In addition to the condition issues already mentioned, the flame atop the shell is split and the visors show some curling, with cracking and wear to the leather overall, else very good.
