Description:

Fine example of a late nineteenth-century cane gun, 25" barrel, 36" overall, believed to be chambered in .410, with a handle formed from a curved length of staghorn, with basic chiseled decoration. The shaft of the cane consists of a steel smooth-bore barrel covered with a light-colored wood, with the 8" or so beneath the barrel enclosing the breech and firing mechanism. To load, the handle is rotated 90 degrees counter-clockwise and pulled backwards, exposing the breech. A small stud protruding from a brass collar beneath the handle acts as the trigger. The positioning of the firing pin is consistent with that seen in rimfire systems. The weapon is completely unmarked but for the numeral "1" in the wood just behind the breech, with no maker identified; however, the breech, firing mechanism and general appearance are similar to examples produced by French gunsmith Joseph-Celestin Dumonthier. A contemporary paper label is affixed to the wood covering the firing mechanism, and bears an indistinct black ink inscription. The bore is dark and shows minor oxidation and pitting, and the functionality of the firing mechanism cannot be confirmed, else very good.
