Description:

IMPERIAL NAZI KRIEGSMARINE DAGGER WITH CUSTOM UPGRADED SCABBARD AND PORTEPEE
Naval dress dagger, 9 in. long and 14 in. overall, crafted during the time of Imperial Germany but clearly also used during World War II owing to the addition of a beautifully detailed national eagle and swastika gilt pommel. After the Kriegsmarine regulation updates of 1938, naval personnel would simply upgrade their long-owned personal daggers, by purchasing a Third Reich pommel to replace the former Imperial Crown-styled pommel. The dagger features a yellow-white grip of a natural material which shows some graining and light discoloration to one side from age and is wrapped by twisted brass wire. The hilt cross guard bears a fouled anchor at the center on either side. There is significant wear to the gilt finish of the cross guard, as well as some oxidation, most notably at the end of the quillons. On the reverse of the guard is a somewhat loose blade release button, the catch underneath is raised, both making it slightly difficult to release the blade from the scabbard. Just beneath the catch is the maker mark for WKC. The attractive blade displays the Imperial Crown on one side and a ship on the water on the other. A very clean and bright blade only showing light oxidation at the ricasso. Housed within a rare custom type hammered scabbard with a gilt finish. Further decorated with oak leaves throughout. This particular type scabbard is rare, as it is a private purchase custom upgrade from the standard Imperial pattern, probably done at the time of World War I, it is also adorned with custom oak leave hanger bands, as well as rarely seen textured hanger rings. Fastened through the hanger rings is a gold portepee, the bullion displaying a small area of fraying at the bottom just above the acorn. The portepee is interwoven with red and black braided threads, most likely representing the national colors. This is an exceptional upgraded dagger, very rarely seen.
