Description:

IMPERIAL GERMAN AND OTHER NATIONS ARMY UNIT REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS (24)
Fine lot of twenty-four World War I-era real photo postcards, each approx. 3.5 x 5.5 in. b/w, each showing large groups or units of Imperial German Army soldiers in uniform. The group features both officers and enlisted men, showing a wide variety of weapons, uniforms, headgear and accouterments, valuable to historians and collectors of the conflict. Notable examples include three views of large groups of soldiers in field uniforms wearing pickelhaube helmets, one clearly bivouacked by the side of a road; a smaller group in field uniforms with a supply wagon, captioned in the plate as being taken at St. Mihiel in 1914; a group of ‘musicians' with harmonicas and other makeshift musical instruments, with captured Belgian M1889 Mausers stacked behind them; two views of soldiers with nurses, one with the men in hospital garb; and six views of recruits in white cadet uniforms. The lot also includes several images of soldiers from other armies of the period, including a squad of Austro-Hungarian troops posing with an MG 08 machine gun; a squad of Czech militia armed with Mauser rifles, stamped on the verso identifying them as ‘Slib Stie ecke jednoty vLomu' (‘Czech Unity Movement in Lom') and dated Oct. 28, 1925; and an additional battalion of Czech soldiers. Twelve are inscribed on the verso, with the remainder blank. Some show minor bumps to the corners or small folds, otherwise in very good condition overall.
