Description:

IMPERIAL GERMAN AND OTHER NATIONS ARMY UNIT REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS (25)
Fine lot of twenty-five World War I-era real photo postcards, each approx. 3.5 x 5.5 in. b/w, each showing large groups or units of Imperial German Army soldiers in uniform. The group features both officers and enlisted men, showing a wide variety of weapons, uniforms, headgear and accouterments, valuable to historians and collectors of the conflict. Notable examples include two views of large groups of soldiers in field uniforms wearing pickelhaube helmets and armed with Gew 98 rifles, with a third group similarly armed and equipped but wearing infantry caps; a battalion in dress uniform with parade helmets; a large group posing by a log dugout; a battalion posing on a footbridge and a nearby boat; a small group in dress uniforms, pouring beer into steins from a keg; and two groups wearing uniforms identifying them as aviation personnel, one inscribed on the verso in German to a recipient in Yonkers, New York and dated 1915. The lot also includes several images of soldiers from other armies of the period, including three views of Austro-Hungarian troops (one including a man in naval uniform), and two other groups in unidentified uniforms. Ten are inscribed on the verso, with one depicting well-equipped soldiers bearing a message in English: ‘All dolled up and no place to go. This is some mighty good cannon fodder. Stan', suggesting its capture by an American soldier. Some show minor bumps to the corners or small folds, otherwise in very good condition overall.
