HYMAN RICKOVER
(1900 - 1986) American admiral responsible for the construction of the "Nuclear Navy", starting with the submarine Nautilus. Good content T.L.S. 1p. 4to., on USS Queenfish letterhead, "At Sea North Atlantic", Oct. 25, 1966 to Rep. William H. Natcher, writing, in part: "We are returning from the first sea trials of the USS QUEENFISH (SNN 651), our twenty-fifth attack type nuclear submarine. The ship completed all tests, including full power operation, both surface and submerged... In addition to the twenty-five attack nuclear submarines, we also have thirty-nine Polaris type submarines, making a total of sixty-four nuclear submarines in operation. When all nuclear submarines presently authorized by Congress are completed, the United States will have a nuclear submarine fleet of forty-one Polaris and sixty-two attack submarines, and a small submarine capable of exploring the ocean bottom."
