Description:

HOWELL COBB
(1815 - 1868) American politician, congressman, and Secretary of the Treasury (1857-60). He resigned from the Treasury in December of 1860 citing that his home state of Georgia (then about to secede from the Union) was in need of his services. Although the Confederate Congress appointed him brigadier general, and he was subsequently promoted to major-general, Cobb took little part in military action. Good content war-date A.L.S. as major general on "Head-Quarters, Georgia Reserve" letterhead, Macon, Aug. 6, 1864, to Maj. Gen. Henry C. Wayne. In part: "I am in receipt of a letter from Genl. Hood of the 4th inst. in which he says, There will be a militia force of about a thousand in Macon for some time which you can call upon in case of danger - As I am thus directed to look to this force for the defense of Macon and other points - I would respectfully ask to be informed of its exact number - whether organized or not - and the character of the organization...also if they have been armed & furnished with ammunition - if so what number of rounds? I would farther request to be kept informed of the number of Militia...as other arrangements for the defense of the place are dependent on it...". Verso bears a 14 line A.E.S. by HENRY C. WAYNE (1815 - 1883) Confederate brigadier general who retained his commission for but 26 days, resigning in order to maintain Georgia's militia which Gov. Joseph Brown was intent on keeping under his own control. The endorsement orders Col. G. W. Lee to report to headquarters as soon as possible. Moderate show-through of endorsement on verso, else very good.
