HOOD IS "CUT VERY BAD" IN HIS FIRST BATTLE AS FULL GENERAL
Good content Union soldier's letter, 1p. 8vo., [In the field], July 21, 186[4] in which William M. Hill of the 123rd N.Y. Regt. writes home, telling of his survival of the battle of Peach Tree Creek one day earlier, IN Hood's first command as full general. In part: "...[I] am yet alive & well but we had the hardest battle that we have had this summer but we whipped them, they [are] cut very bad. Captain Wiley was killed & Henry Welch; Gifford [and] Thomas Donahue but I guess they will live if they get good care. They have got breast works now...". Fine condition. Welch was killed at Peach Tree Creek, thus dating this letter. The Confederates lost nearly 5,000 men in the battle, four times the Union losses.
