Description:

NEWS OF THE BATTLE OF ST. CHARLES
A.L.S., "William W. Aspinall", 2pp., 8vo., "Near Memphis", [June, 1872], a letter from a Union soldier regarding the explosion of the USS Mound City during the Battle of St. Charles. In part: "...There is a good many boats a comeing [sic] and going. The gun boats is laying before the city, that is the part of them, the flag ship Benton, the Louisville, and Mound City are here. The others have gone down the River. One of them got blowed up down their. They went up White River, the Rebels had a battery of Parrot guns. They shot a ball into the boiler and blowed the whole top off of the boat and scalded 150 men to death but they took the battery and one thousand prisoners so they didn't come out so bad after all. The 46th Reg was driven, their Col. Fitch was commander..." Though the letter has many of the details correct, Aspinall was mistaken-- it was the Mound City that exploded under fire on June 17, 1862. Col. Graham Fitch led the 46th Indiana to a successful victory nonetheless, ultimately winning the Battle of St. Charles. Age toned with minor folds, else fine.
