Description:

'HITLER AS SEEN BY HIS DOCTORS' AND OTHER INTELLIGENCE REPORTS ON HITLER'S HEALTH
A nearly complete collection of excessively rare reports generated by U.S. Army Military Intelligence almost immediately after war's end in order to provide an in depth view of Hitler's mental and physical health based on interviews with his closest physician. The first report is headed 'Hitler as Seen by His Doctors', 46pp. legal folio, [n.p., Military Intelligence Service Center], Oct. 15, 1945, a confidential report containing a highly-detailed compilation of data obtained from three of Adolf Hitler's six chief physicians, namely Hans-Karl von Hasselbach, Erwin Giesing, and Karl Brandt. This initial report concerns itself with a complete physical description of Hitler and his medical history, with neurological data, spinal root functions, psychiatric observations, etc. The second report, bearing the same title, was issued on Nov. 29, 1945. The 30pp. legal folio report in this instance incorporates information obtained from six physicians, including his primary doctor Theodore Morrell, as well as Erwin Giesing, Walter Loehlein, Karl Weber, A. Nissle and E. Brinkmann who each specialized in different areas of treatment. Much of the report includes information from the Nov. 29 report, but Morell's addition yielded a long list of medications (28) he had prescribed for Hitler's various ailments. Morell, whom the report obtusely labels a 'shrewd, money-crazed quack', is reported as having ordered Hitler to treat himself with dangerous compounds, including some which contained barbiturates; strophanthin; sodium diethylbarbiturate (to counter the effects of methamphetamine); extract of belladonna; Oxycodone; Orchikrin (an extract of bovine testosterone, pituitary gland glycerophosphate, many marketed as an aphrodisiac); Prostacrinum (extract of seminal vesicles and prostate, for depression); and a host of heart and stomach drugs and tonics. A paragraph is devoted to Hitler's 'sex characteristics', wherein it is stated: '...[his] sexual organs showed no indications of abnormality or pathology...Hitler was very fond of the society of attractive women...MORRELL believes that Hitler ...did have sexual intercourse with Eva Braun, though they were accustomed to sleeping in separate beds...' A 2pp. undated report sets forth a biography of Morrell. Additionally, 28 pages of annexes are included, being supplemental reports by Morrell startling and others. These include: a report on an examination of Hitler's eyesight following his reports of cloudy vision; cauterization of his ruptured eardrum following the July 20, 1944 bomb explosion; sinus and oral examination; copies of three electrocardiograms taken between 1941 and 1944 and their analysis by Morrell; an examination of Hitler's blood, and of his stool. There is also a cover letter and envelope for five x-rays taken of Hitler's head shortly after the bomb attempt on his life, but these x-rays are regrettably not present. The reports are bound in a modern file folder and bear two file holes at the top of each page. The cover of the file folder is detached, pages lightly toned and first page a bit soiled, else very good. Fascinating content in a report only very rarely seen - it is believed that only 59 copies of this report were ever issued.
