HIROHITO
(1901 - 1989) Emperor of Japan revered as a god by his people, leader of Japan through World War II who ultimately made the decision to capitulate. Excellent D.S., 1p. 14 x 20 in., Tokyo Imperial Palace, Nov. 26, 1965, an official appointment of William Clark Jr. as Consul of the United States of America in Sapporo, Japan. For his dedicated service as an American diplomat Clark would receive several awards, including the Order of the Sacred Treasure Gold and Silver and the Department of State Distinguished Honor Award. Boldly signed by Hirohito at the bottom left, co-signed by Prime Minister HAYATO IKEDA and Foreign Minister of Affairs KATSUO OKAZAKI. Along the left edge are two blind embossed Imperial seals. Nicely framed. In excellent condition. WILLIAM CLARK JR. (1930-2008) American diplomat who served as Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to India. He began his career at the United States Department of State as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs. Prior to this, he served for four years as Minister and deputy chief of mission for the Embassy of the United States, Tokyo, and as deputy chief of mission and Chargé d'affaires for the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt. After his retirement from the United States Foreign Service, Clark was president of the Japan Society.
