HIDEKI TOJO
(1884 - 1948) Japanese political and military leader, as Premier he ordered the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941, remained militaristic for the entire war, finally executed following the Tokyo War Crimes trials. Large, bold signature in black ink, "Hideki Tojo" on the verso of a dollar bill, where Tojo has also signed in Japanese kanji. The bill is a 1935 C series, a silver certificate with a gray "1" and a blue Treasury seal. From the family of Alexander Chiemingo, an enlisted Army military policeman who guarded Tojo and other Japanese prisoners at Sugamo Prison during the International Military Tribunal for the Far East. Included in the lot are two specimens of war-date currency: The first, a "Fifty Centavos" bill, is known as Japanese Invasion Money. These Southern Development Bank Notes were issued by the Japanese Military Authority in areas conquered by the Japanese as currency to purchase war supplies. The second is a Japanese "1 Yen" note. Bill shows moderate wear and a tear which has been archivally repaired, neither affecting signature.
