Description:

HERMANN GORING
(1893 - 1946) German politician who began his career as an ace in World War I, rose to become Hitler's right-hand man and head of the Luftwaffe, finally captured and committed suicide on the eve of his execution. Fine content early T.L.S. in pencil on his Reichstag letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Berlin, Dec. 20, 1930, to CARL ROVER (1889-1942), Gauleiter of Weser-Ems who personally signed the order for every Jew deported from Bremen. In part: '...According to newspaper reports, you have made a start on negotiations about the formation of an administration in Bremen. I took the opportunity to let you know confidentially, when we met at the Reichstag, that on this subject the Fuhrer reserves the decision for himself in every instance, and in most cases commissions particular persons to deal with them. I advise you, therefore, not to enter into any commitment either as concerns yourself personally or any particular course of action...to talk on the telephone with the Fuhrer about this subject, and he instructed me to let you know that you should have informed him when negotiations were about to begin. I ask you to do so by return of post so that no difficulties arise. I leave it to your judgement whether to write direct to the Fuhrer's office, or alternatively to let me know what your proposals are in respect of this matter; I would then put them in front of the Fuhrer and plead your case. In so far as you have proposals of your own, I propose at the same time to add a reasonably full sketch of them, together with a critical examination. It is, moreover, important also in such cases to know what kind of political set-up or what kind of political program is under consideration, and how far we can collaborate with it. We National Socialists can view a political set-up only in the context of the overall situation, and not merely in the framework of individual circumstances and I have just had some further practical experience to this effect in Danzig. I wished to tell you of this only in order to direct your attention to the problems, as shown by my own experience, and to prevent your encountering difficulties with the country's leaders, as would happen if things are settled which the country's leaders subsequently precisely on grounds of the overall consequences have to repudiate. It is entirely for this reason that the Fuhrer reserves decision to himself on participation in political arrangements, even in local instances...' Very good. Rover and Goring would butt heads again over the latter's desire to incorporate Bremen into Prussia. Rover, however, opposed the move consistently and managed to convince Hitler to decline Goring's requests. Bormann would have Rover murdered once Rover's syphilis-induced dementia went out of control. Pencil note by Rover at top, paperclip stain, else very good.
