Description:

A superbly crafted bronze replica of the large gilded 'Kronenhirschs' ('crown deer') statue constructed for the International Hunting Exhibit held in Berlin in 1937, sponsored by the 'Deutsche Jagerschaft' ('German Hunting Society'), and supposedly presented to Reichsjagermeister Hermann Goering. The to-scale replica depicts a standing 20-point stag with detailed features, roughly 18 x 20 x 3.5 in., constructed entirely of bronze, and stands on a 16.5 x 3.5 in. base, weighing 20.5 kg. Along the side of the base is inscribed 'Ehrenpreiss Internationale Jagdausstellung Berlin 1937' ('Honorary Award International Hunting Exhibition Berlin 1937'), while on a top corner of the base is the name 'H. Darsow.' Light oxidation present throughout, especially on the underside of the statue, both antlers are slightly loose yet still attached and have two broken points, overall very good and entirely presentable. The International Hunting Exhibit held in Berlin from November 2nd-21st, 1937, was intended as a gathering of the world's hunters to share understanding of the sport, compare the finest trophies, but also showcase the superiority of German and National Socialist society. Delegations from over 30 countries took part in the event and filled six different halls. Prizes were given out to those trophies voted the best, and were donated by Nazi officials including Adolf Hitler, Heinrich Himmler, and Konstantin von Neurath. In addition, there were also a variety of vendors, falconers and equestrian demonstrations, and speeches given. Outside the entrance to the main hall, there was a large golden deer statue called the 'Kronenhirschs', designed by artist Johannes Darsow for the event and modeled after a famous stag called 'Raufbold' whom Hermann Goering had shot in 1936. This large statue can be seen in footage of the event that survives to this day. Following the event, the larger deer was taken to Goering's estate of Carinhall, and after the war it ended up in the park of Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam. It would be later be moved to the Tierpark in Berlin in 1969 where it can still be admired today. This smaller replica, also reportedly presented to Goering and kept in his smaller hunting lodge in Parlow-Glambeck, went into private ownership after the war until being purchased by our consignor. An extremely fine and desirable bronze sculpture.
