Description:

(1900 - 1945) Hitler's Chief of the SS and Gestapo placed in charge of security and responsible for the construction and operation of extermination camps. He chose suicide rather than face a hangman's noose at Nuremberg. Especially rare fine content and association A.L.S. "H. Himmler" on his personal letterhead, 4pp. 4to., Gmund, July 13, 1939 to SS-Obergruppenfuhrer RICHARD-WALTHER DARRE (1895-1953), Nazi Minister of Food and head of the Central Office of Race and Resettlement of the SS. In part: "...On the occasion of your birthday I hasten to convey to you the wishes that come from a friend's heart. May the new year bring you, above all, a return of your health which is the prerequisite necessary to master our destiny which is not a paltry one. An old map of Bohemia is my personal gift to you...I hope that the Damascus sword will also meet with your fond reception. I arrived at Gmund yesterday. I had an enormous mass of work to accomplish. Beginning tomorrow I will be celebrating the Day of German Art for three days...thereafter I am planning to go off on a fortnight's vacation...Murge spent 14 days at the Ostsee with Pegge, the best thing they could have done...And now, a firm handshake and Heil Hitler. Yours in friendship, H. Himmler" Small paperclip stain at top, else fine. With holograph envelope with blind embossed seal on verso hand-addressed by Himmler to Darre. Two pieces. By September 1938, Himmler was already demanding that Darré step down as leader of the Race & Resettlement Office in favor of Günther Pancke. Darré finally had to resign as Reich Minister in 1942, ostensibly on health grounds.
