Cuban aristocrat Maria de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, Condesa de Merlin, was a prominent figure in Parisian society circles. Her salons drew a veritable who's who of acclaimed artists, authors, and composers of the time. Included in her frequent attendees were such figures as Georges Sand, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Gioacchino Rossini, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, among others.
