831. HEINRICH HEINE Fine association A.L.S. "Henri Heine" 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], Apr. 18, [n.y.], in French to the Countess of Merlin. In part: "...I accept with pleasure your invitation and thank you very sincerely. It is...a charming and marvelous kindness...". Cuban aristocrat Maria de las Mercedes Santa Cruz y Montalvo, Condesa de Merlin, was a prominent figure in Parisian society circles. Her salons drew a veritable who's who of acclaimed artists, authors, and composers of the time. Included in her frequent attendees were such figures as Georges Sand, Giacomo Meyerbeer, Gioacchino Rossini, Frederic Chopin, Franz Liszt, among others. An author in her own right, de Merlin is best remembered for her 1840 travel literature, and work on Maria Malibran, and her memoirs. Boldly written and very good. $4,000 - 6,000
