HARRY T. HAYS
(1820 - 1876) Confederate general who led the unsuccessful attack on Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg. A.L.S. 1p. 4to., New Orleans, Dec. 31, 1855 to Samuel P. Collins at Bastrop, La. concerning a land bounty to be awarded Collins for his service with the Mississippi Volunteers, presumably during the Mexican War. He writes, in part: "...I am glad to have heard from you, as I have been endeavoring to for the last twelve months, to ascertain where a letter would reach you. Through a recommendation of the late J. L. Mathewson I saw he had move[d] an application for Land Warrant for... Samuel P. Collins private in Capt. Wilks Company 1st Regt. Miss. vol. through the agency of one of our late members of Congress I obtained the warrant for 100 acres..." Toned from tape repairs, discoloration at heavy folds, else very good.
