Description:

HANDWRITTEN MINUTES OF ALTOONA KU KLUX KLAN MEETINGS
Good collection of thirty-three documents, the majority A.D.S., but with two typed, comprising the minutes of regular meetings, or "Klonklaves", held by the Altoona, Pennsylvania chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. The majority of these minutes were kept by and are in the hand of John F. Marshall, "Kligrapp" (secretary) of the Altoona Klan, and appear to record weekly meetings spanning the period from December 16, 1922 through October 24, 1923, with one dating from January 13, 1925. The majority of the minutes are signed by Marshall, either in full or using his "Klavern" membership number "59", although at least two are signed by an "acting Kligrapp", and a third by W.C. Tipton, "Exalted Cyclops" (local leader) of the Altoona Klan. The content of the minutes largely concerns the payment of dues, the acquisition of robes and other supplies, voting on petitions submitted by Klansmen and other procedural matters. However, selected examples feature more interesting content, including a lecture by one of the Klansmen, recorded in the minutes for June 13, 1923, in part: "... The Speaker impressed the respect due to ''Old Glory'' and all things which the American Flag stands for, of the impending danger from the foes who are within our Country and their methods of working to gain the ruling power of Congress and Senate. He also denounced the action of one Gov. Al Smith who has no faith in the 18th amendment of the Constitution or the rulings of the U.S. government whatsoever. The essential things needed in our country today; The flag should be accorded more courtesies than it is receiving, The necessity of all members of this American Organization in attending church and following the teachings of our Lord Christ in their every walk of life, The urgent necessity of the Protestant peoples in banding together into one large body to combat the Catholic influence, all ready and working to take control of our Forefathers'' Country by making one Al Smith the first Catholic President of the U.S... [all sic]" Much more. The minutes overall show minor toning, paper clip marks, and folds, else very good. Not fully examined by us, should be seen.
