Description:

HAND-SEWN FLAG FROM BETSY ROSS' GRAND-DAUGHTER
Wonderful hand-sewn silk flag with 13 embroidered stars in canton; 7.25 x 12 in., period-inscribed on hoist: 'First Flag made 1777 by Betsy Ross. This copy of the original flag, made in Feb. 1903 by Rachel Albright aged 90 y. 8 m. Grand-daughter of Betsy Ross'. Tiny hole at extreme upper-right corner, else fine condition. The flag is accompanied by the frame in which it was originally encased. A partial handwritten label on the reverse reads: 'Eugene H. Spangler Rachel Albright was a great Aunt of Wm. Brownlee Albright, husband of Ella Yeage[r?] [second?] cousin of Geo. Leon [illeg.]...', hinting that Ross was a distant relative of Spangler. A near-identical flag was sold by Cowan's for $5,875 in 2014.
