Description:

Oustanding original plan depicting the layout of the German concentration camp KZ Esterwegen. The camp was established in 1933 as a concentration camp for 2,000 so-called political 'protective custody' prisoners and was for a time the second largest concentration camp after Dachau and was used as a prison camp until 1945. Post-war, the camp served as a British internment camp. Rare war-date original plan of Esterwegen, 40 x 16 in., and professionally drawn on a 1:500 scale on the verso of a British invasion map showing Ostende. According to the included letter of provenance, the map was made by a British Army cartographer in May, 1945, just after the camp's liberation as British occupiers prepared the facility for use interning German prisoners. The detailed plan includes all of the elements in place when the camp was used by the Germans, with many now 'repurposed.' Shown are the prisoners' barracks and latrines, fences and guard towers, prison officers' quarters, camp hospital, internee cook house, 'T.B. SICKBAY', 'PUNISHMENT CELLS', 'FOUNTAIN', 'CHALET', 'SUMMER HOUSE', 'GRAVES', etc. The letter of provenance (unsigned) adds further details and states it was prepared by an interpreter. Fine condition.
